MIAMI (Diya TV) — Dr. Vivek Murthy, the former U.S. Surgeon General, has launched a new national effort to fight loneliness and social disconnection in America. Called The Together Project, the initiative aims to rebuild human connection and strengthen communities across the country. Murthy announced the launch on July 28 in Miami. The project is backed by funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a major supporter of community-building efforts.
Dr. Murthy, an Indian American physician, has long focused on the health effects of loneliness. He will serve as chair of the initiative. Social isolation has become a serious issue in the United States. Experts warn that loneliness harms both physical and mental health. It can raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, and anxiety. It can even shorten a person’s lifespan.
Dr. Murthy has called loneliness a “public health crisis” and believes strong human connections are key to healing.
“The loneliness epidemic is not just a medical issue,” Murthy said during the launch event. “It’s a social issue, an economic issue, and a moral one. We need to act together.”
The Together Project will support programs that bring people together. It will work with schools, workplaces, local governments, and nonprofit groups to promote connection and community building. Murthy’s interest in the topic began years ago. During his travels as Surgeon General, he met people from all walks of life. Many told him they felt lonely, even when surrounded by others.
In 2020, he published “Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World.” The book explores how human connection improves well-being and how society can respond to growing isolation. The new initiative builds on that work. It takes research, policy, and community action and combines them into a national movement.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is providing major financial support for the project. The foundation has a history of investing in community engagement and civic health. Its backing allows The Together Project to expand quickly and build partnerships across the U.S. Alberto Ibargüen, president of the Knight Foundation, said, “This is about rebuilding the social fabric of our communities. We are proud to support this important work.”
Recent studies show that nearly half of U.S. adults feel lonely regularly. This problem affects all ages but is especially severe among young people and older adults. Loneliness can increase the risk of premature death by as much as 29%, according to data from the U.S. Surgeon General’s office. The issue also places a burden on healthcare systems and weakens social trust.
Dr. Murthy has emphasized that human connection is as essential as food, water, and shelter. He believes that by addressing loneliness, society can reduce suffering and improve public health.
In the coming months, the project will roll out local partnerships in key cities. It will also launch a national awareness campaign and provide tools to help individuals and communities build stronger relationships.
The goal is to spark a cultural shift—one where connection is seen as a core value and a public good. Murthy’s team is calling on leaders, organizations, and everyday Americans to join the movement. The project’s website offers resources and ways to get involved.
“We can’t solve loneliness alone,” Murthy said. “But together, we can build a more connected, compassionate country.”
As Surgeon General under both the Obama and Biden administrations, Dr. Murthy brought attention to the social factors that shape health. Now, with The Together Project, he is turning that vision into action.
The initiative aims to show that even in a fast-moving digital world, real human connection still matters. And with the right support, America can become a nation of stronger, healthier communities.
