SAN JOSE, Calif. (Diya TV) — The heart of Silicon Valley came alive with color, light, and music as Downtown San Jose hosted its first-ever Diwali Celebration. The landmark event drew more than 10,000 attendees, uniting the community in a grand celebration of culture, inclusion, and joy.

Diya TV was the media partner of this event presented jointly by the San Jose Downtown Association, City of San Jose, Mayor Matt Mahan, PARKSJ, and Association of Indo Americans (AIA). Plaza de Cesar Chavez was transformed into a dazzling festival of lights. It marked a historic milestone for San Jose, bringing India’s most celebrated festival—Diwali—into the city’s vibrant downtown for the first time.

The venue glittered with colorful Diwali decorations and lights that mirrored the energy and diversity of Silicon Valley. San Jose City Hall was illuminated with Diwali-themed lighting, symbolizing the city’s embrace of cultural harmony and inclusion.

The evening kicked off with high-energy Bollywood performances by local Bay Area dance groups. Artists entertained the crowd with upbeat choreography and lively music that set an electrifying tone. Audience members joined spontaneous dance sessions and a surprise flash mob, filling the plaza with movement and laughter.

The celebration reached its peak when Vidya Vox took the stage. The acclaimed YouTube star and singer-songwriter wowed the audience with her signature fusion of Indian classical sounds and modern pop music. Her performance brought the crowd to its feet and kept the energy high until the grand finale—a community-wide DJ dance party that united thousands of attendees in rhythm and joy.

Mayor Matt Mahan called the Diwali celebration a reflection of San Jose’s true values. “This celebration truly reflects the values of our city — inclusivity, diversity, vibrancy, and joy,” he said, praising the community’s effort in making the event a reality.

Gumby Marques, CEO of the San Jose Downtown Association, shared his excitement over the festival’s success. “You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, you don’t have to be German to celebrate Oktoberfest, and you don’t have to be Indian to enjoy Diwali,” he said. His message of unity resonated across the event, turning the evening into what he described as a “Diwali for All.”

The celebration drew more than 20 elected officials and dignitaries from across the Bay Area. Among them were Congressman Sam Liccardo, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, and Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan. Their presence underscored the importance of cultural diversity and the growing recognition of Diwali as a festival that transcends communities.

During the festivities, organizers presented “Awards of Excellence” to two influential community figures. Assemblymember Ash Kalra received recognition for his leadership and his successful passage of AB 268, which made Diwali an official state holiday in California.

Community leader Ajay Bhutoria was also honored for his advocacy and leadership within the Indian diaspora. His efforts in promoting cultural understanding and civic engagement earned widespread applause from the crowd.

The AIA’s Diwali Carnival featured food stalls, cultural exhibits, vendor booths, and family-friendly carnival games. The event brought together people from all backgrounds to share the joy and spirit of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights.

For many attendees, the celebration was more than just a festival—it was a moment of pride for the Bay Area’s Indian American community and a showcase of San Jose’s inclusive identity. From the glittering decorations to the lively performances, every moment highlighted the city’s growing commitment to multicultural celebration.
