TORONTO (Diya TV) — A Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday afternoon, flipping over on the snowy runway. All 80 passengers and crew members on Flight 4819 were evacuated, with at least eight people suffering injuries, including a child and two adults in critical condition.
The accident happened at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time when the Bombardier CRJ-900LR flight operated by Endeavor Air under contract for Delta Connection was making a landing amidst tough weather. Toronto had witnessed a major snowstorm in recent days, bringing more than 22 centimeters (8.6 inches) of snowfall to the airport with gusts up to 40 mph.
Emergency response teams quickly responded to the scene to help passengers and crew. Peel Regional Paramedic Services indicated that eight people were taken to local hospitals, three of whom were in critical condition, including a child.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has begun an investigation into the cause of the crash. Although the reason is not yet determined, prevailing weather conditions, including strong crosswinds and low visibility caused by blowing snow, are being examined as possible contributing factors.
In its wake, the Toronto Pearson International Airport grounded all flights coming and going to support emergency procedures. The airport was coping with gales and very low temperatures while airlines were working to recover from the weekend snowstorm.
Delta Air Lines admitted the incident with Flight 4819 and said that they are assisting Canadian authorities in their investigation. The airline reaffirmed its dedication to passenger and crew safety, assisting those impacted by the crash.
This incident is the latest in a string of recent aviation mishaps that have caused alarm among passengers and the wider aviation community. Authorities are calling on travelers to remain aware of possible delays and cancellations while the investigation is ongoing and the airport strives to return to normal operations.
