WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Telangana, India, advising travelers to take extra precautions due to a significant rise in chikungunya cases among returning U.S. travelers. Late last week, the CDC released a travel advisory with a warning over the mosquito-borne virus detected at unusually high rates among individuals who traveled from the Indian state.
Symptoms of Chikungunya include fever, arthralgia, headache, and rash. Most cases lead to severe joint swelling and discomfort. The CDC advises travelers to use preventive measures, such as wearing insect repellent, applying repellant to clothing and gear, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and staying in air-conditioned or screened accommodations, which are measures taken to avoid mosquito bites.
Vaccines to chikungunya are available for people above 18 years traveling to areas with outbreaks. The CDC however states that the vaccine is not appropriate for everyone as it has some restrictions. People suffering from weaker immune systems or allergic reactions associated with constituents in the vaccine should avoid vaccination. Pregnant women are also advised not to travel to Telangana, especially in the final stages of their pregnancy, because there is a danger of vertical transmission of the virus. The CDC warned that such a virus could lead to severe illness or lifelong consequences for infants.
The CDC also advised pregnant travelers that vaccination should be deferred in the first trimester of pregnancy and after the 36th week of pregnancy. Those contemplating travel during pregnancy should consult healthcare providers about weighing the risks of exposure against the benefits of vaccination, particularly if they are at high risk for infection.
Therefore, it is recommended that travelers who present with any of these symptoms, such as joint pain, fever, or rash, attend a health facility immediately for treatment to manage the disease and reduce the intensity of the symptoms. As per the advisory, heightened alertness and precautions are essential in preventing further spread of chikungunya and protecting public health.
The CDC’s travel advisory for Telangana serves as a reminder for the public to stay vigilant when traveling to areas with ongoing health risks, particularly mosquito-borne diseases. By following the recommended precautions, travelers can help protect themselves and others from chikungunya and other potential health threats.
