LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — CBS has given a pilot order to Zarna, a multi-camera comedy starring stand-up comedian Zarna Garg. The show, co-written by Garg and The Big C creator Darlene Hunt, is being produced by Mindy Kaling’s Kaling International and Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions, along with Warner Bros. Television.

Zarna is inspired by the life of the show’s star and co-writer, Zarna Garg, who immigrated to the U.S. from India as a teenager. The comedy follows her character, a proud immigrant raising her American-born children with traditional Indian values. Now, as her children are growing up, Zarna shifts her focus to pursuing her own American dream. The pilot reflects Garg’s personal journey, balancing her cultural heritage with life in the U.S.

The project, which has been in development at CBS since September, quickly became one of Warner Bros. Television’s top comedy contenders this season. CBS’s decision to pick up the pilot highlights the network’s effort to diversify its comedy lineup, with Zarna marking Warner Bros.’ first non-Chuck Lorre comedy at the network in recent years.

The series also brings Mindy Kaling back to broadcast television. Kaling began her career on The Office and later created The Mindy Project, and has become a leading figure in portraying the Indian immigrant experience on screen. Her most recent success was the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, which centered around a first-generation Indian-American teenager.

Along with Kaling, showrunner and executive producer credits will go to Darlene Hunt and Zarna Garg. Kaling and Jessica Kumai Scott are producing through Kaling International with Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment. Producing for Hartbeat Productions will be Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein. Garg has partnered with Hart off of her win on his 2021 comedy competition Lyft Comics on Peacock that helped propel her to further success in stand-up.

Garg, who is a law graduate and became a stay-at-home mom, entered comedy after her children encouraged her. She has since become a household name, with her debut special, Zarna Garg: One in a Billion, premiering on Prime Video in 2023. Garg also featured in the 2022 Apple TV+ series Gutsy, hosted by Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton.
