LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Vince Zampella, the influential video game executive and co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, has died in a car crash in California. He was 55. The crash happened Sunday on a Los Angeles highway and killed two people, authorities said. His death has sent shockwaves through the global gaming industry.

Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, confirmed Zampella’s death. He co-founded Respawn and helped shape some of the most successful video games of the past two decades. Fans, developers, and industry leaders shared tributes within hours of the news.

The California Highway Patrol said Zampella was traveling in a Ferrari with another person when the vehicle veered off the roadway. The car struck a concrete barrier and caught fire. Officials said the passenger was ejected from the vehicle, while the driver remained trapped inside. Both people died at the scene.

Investigators have not confirmed whether Zampella was driving. Authorities also have not released the identity of the second person. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

“This is an unimaginable loss,” an Electronic Arts spokesperson told the BBC. “Our hearts are with Vince’s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work.”

Zampella co-created Call of Duty in 2003 with longtime collaborators Jason West and Grant Collier. The game drew inspiration from World War II and quickly became a cultural force. The franchise has sold more than 500 million copies worldwide. It ranks among the best-selling video game series in history.

The success of Call of Duty helped transform Activision into one of the most profitable gaming companies in the world. The franchise also expanded beyond games and inspired an upcoming live-action film.

Industry experts credit Zampella with redefining first-person shooters. He focused on fast gameplay, cinematic storytelling, and accessible multiplayer design. These choices influenced countless games that followed.

Zampella’s impact reached far beyond one franchise. He played a key role in creating Medal of Honor, another landmark shooter series. Later, he co-founded Respawn Entertainment and led the development of Titanfall and Apex Legends.

Apex Legends became a global hit and one of the most popular battle royale games ever released. Players praised its movement system, team-based design, and frequent updates. Zampella often said he cared deeply about how games made players feel.

“He really cared about the player experience,” said Keza MacDonald, video games editor at The Guardian, during an interview with BBC Newshour. “That always came across when you spoke to him.”

Geoff Keighley, journalist and host of The Game Awards, called Zampella a “dear friend” and a “visionary executive” in a post on X. Keighley wrote a book about the making of Titanfall and worked closely with Zampella over the years.

“While he created some of the most influential games of our time, I always felt he still had his greatest one ahead of him,” Keighley wrote. “It’s heartbreaking that we’ll never get to play it.”

Popular YouTuber MrRoflWaffles, known for his Call of Duty content, said Zampella inspired a whole generation of players and creators. He credited the developer for shaping his own career.

In 2010, Activision fired Zampella and West from Infinity Ward, the studio behind Call of Duty. The move led to a high-profile legal dispute that ended in an out-of-court settlement in 2012. Zampella later joined Electronic Arts, where he oversaw major projects, including work on Battlefield 6.

Infinity Ward released a statement honoring its former leader. “Vince will always have a special place in our history,” the company said. “Your legacy of creating iconic, lasting entertainment is immeasurable.” Zampella leaves behind a towering legacy in video game history. His work shaped how millions play, connect, and compete. The industry now mourns a creator who helped define modern gaming.
