CINCINNATI, Ohio (Diya TV) — Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and recent entrant into the 2026 Ohio gubernatorial race, has found himself at the center of an online debate following the resurfacing of a year-old interview in which he appeared barefoot.
The interview, taken at Ramaswamy’s home last year, depicts the 39-year-old speaking about different issues barefoot. When the video surfaced again on social media, critics called the look “uncivilized” and “anti-American.” One critic wrote, “Maybe at least have some socks on while you interview for a job in the most powerful empire on the planet, yeah?”
In defense against the criticism, Ramaswamy justified his action, saying, “This is America, folks. I let the dogs out in my house when I feel like it.” He noted that going barefoot at home is a personal preference and corresponds to cultural practice.
Defenders came out in support of Ramaswamy, pointing out that going barefoot indoors is the norm in most cultures, especially South Asian ones. A user pointed out, “Almost all Indians go barefoot in their own houses. There’s nothing wrong with it. Just a cultural thing.”
Ramaswamy’s governorship campaign, which was launched last week, is centered on education reform and industrial investment. He supports universal school choice and merit pay for teachers in public schools to deal with what he views as an education crisis. He also calls for a ban on cell phones in schools and a civics test for high school graduation to reinforce patriotism.
Ramaswamy wants to make Ohio a world leader in future industries like the production of semiconductors, nuclear energy, biotechnology, and Bitcoin. He also recommends cutting Ohio’s state income tax to zero and eliminating bureaucracy and waste.
