TRENTON, N.J. (Diya TV) — Indian American Balvir Singh secured a decisive victory in the New Jersey State Assembly election from the state’s 7th Legislative District, continuing his rise as a prominent voice for equity and education in Burlington County. Running alongside fellow Democrat Carol Murphy, Singh helped deliver a sweeping win for the Democratic Party, marking another milestone in his growing political career.
Singh and Murphy won the two available seats in the 7th District, defeating Republican challengers Doug Dillon and Dione Johnson. According to election results reported late Tuesday night, Murphy received 33% of the vote, while Singh followed closely with 32%. Their Republican opponents trailed far behind, each earning about 17%.
The two Democrats combined for more than 66% of the total vote, underscoring the party’s firm grip on the district. Singh himself secured 56,826 votes, just behind Murphy’s 58,643, demonstrating strong voter confidence in his message of fairness, inclusion, and better education opportunities.
Born in a small village in Punjab, India, Singh moved to the United States as a child. He graduated from Burlington City High School and has spent his adult life serving his community. His journey from a small Indian village to the New Jersey State Assembly has inspired many in the Indian American and Sikh communities across the country.
Singh first made history earlier this year when he became New Jersey’s first Sikh legislator, after winning a special election convention to replace now-U.S. Rep. Herb Conaway. His victory broke barriers and reflected the state’s growing cultural diversity.
Before the general election, Singh faced a tough challenge in the June 2025 Democratic primaries. He narrowly defeated Bordentown Township Mayor Eric Holliday, who was backed by gubernatorial hopeful Steve Fulop. Despite limited campaign spending from Holliday, the race remained close. Singh won by a small 28%–26% margin, while Murphy finished far ahead with 46%.
The close primary tested Singh’s campaign strength and solidified his grassroots support. His focus on equity, education, and economic fairness resonated with local voters, helping him build momentum heading into the general election.
Singh’s running mate, Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel), has served the 7th Legislative District since 2018, following the departure of Troy Singleton to the State Senate. Together, Murphy and Singh presented a united Democratic front, emphasizing community development, accessible education, and progressive governance.
Murphy’s long-standing experience paired well with Singh’s fresh perspective. Their teamwork helped energize voters in Burlington County, a region that has leaned Democratic in recent years. Once a Republican stronghold under former State Sen. Diane Allen (R-Edgewater Park), the district has shifted firmly blue, reflecting changing political dynamics.
Throughout his campaign, Singh prioritized equity and education, two pillars that have defined his public service. He has long advocated for fair opportunities in schools and workplaces, pushing for inclusive policies that empower underrepresented communities.
Singh’s professional background as an educator and community advocate has shaped his approach to policymaking. He has promised to continue fighting for funding to improve public schools, expand access to higher education, and strengthen the local economy through innovation and workforce development.
With this victory, Singh can finally settle into his legislative role without the immediate pressure of another election. After a whirlwind year of campaigning, conventions, and primaries, he now turns his focus toward delivering results for Burlington County residents.
“I’m honored to represent our district and continue working for fairness and opportunity for all,” Singh said in a statement following his win. “Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable New Jersey.”
