WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Amit Kshatriya, an Indian-American leader at NASA, is playing a key role in shaping the United States’ return to the Moon. From watching rocket launches as a child in Texas to overseeing major operations at the space agency, his journey reflects dedication, skill, and a deep passion for space exploration.

Kshatriya grew up in Katy, a suburb of Houston, where he watched rocket launches that sparked his interest in space. The city is home to Johnson Space Center, a hub for mission control and astronaut training. Those early experiences helped shape his career path.

Born in Brookfield, Wisconsin, to Indian immigrant parents, Kshatriya built a strong academic foundation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and later completed a master’s degree in mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin. His education prepared him for a complex and evolving career in science and engineering.

Kshatriya did not begin his career at NASA. After graduation, he explored roles in the oil and gas and medical industries. In 2003, he joined United Space Alliance, a major NASA contractor for the space shuttle program. That move marked the start of his long journey in space operations.

Over the years, he worked in several technical roles. He served as a software engineer, robotics engineer, and spacecraft operator. Much of his early work focused on the robotic assembly of the International Space Station. His contributions helped support one of the most complex engineering projects in human history.

Kshatriya took on greater responsibility as his career advanced. From 2014 to 2017, he worked as a space station flight director. In this role, he led global teams responsible for operating the space station during all phases of flight. His leadership ensured smooth mission execution and crew safety.

He later became deputy and acting manager of the ISS Vehicle Office from 2017 to 2021. There, he handled engineering, logistics, and hardware management. His work helped maintain the station’s long-term operations. In 2021, he moved to NASA Headquarters in Washington. He joined the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate. He played a key role in the success of Artemis I, which marked a major step in NASA’s plan to send humans back to the Moon.

Kshatriya later served as deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Moon-to-Mars program. This initiative aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and prepare for future missions to Mars. His work focuses on coordinating large teams and managing complex systems. These efforts support NASA’s broader goal of deep space exploration. The program remains central to U.S. space policy and global scientific progress.

In September last year, Kshatriya became NASA’s associate administrator. He now serves as the agency’s highest-ranking civil servant. He also acts as a senior adviser to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. In this role, he oversees NASA’s 10 center directors and mission directorate leaders. He also serves as the agency’s chief operating officer. His responsibilities include guiding daily operations and supporting long-term strategy.

Kshatriya has received several honors for his work. NASA awarded him the Outstanding Leadership Medal for his role as lead flight director during the 50th expedition to the space station. This recognition highlights his ability to lead complex missions under pressure. He also received the Silver Snoopy award. Astronauts present this honor to individuals who contribute to flight safety and mission success. Kshatriya earned it for his work as lead robotics officer during a key commercial cargo mission to the space station.
