NEW YORK  (Diya TV) — Venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz is doubling down on digital assets. Its crypto arm, a16z crypto, has raised $2.2 billion for its fifth crypto-focused fund. The firm says the market is shifting from hype-driven speculation to real-world adoption.

The new fund is smaller than the firm’s $4.5 billion fourth fund raised in 2022. That earlier fund still holds the record as the largest crypto venture fund. This time, a16z crypto chose a leaner approach. Paul Cafiero said shorter fundraising cycles help the firm stay aligned with fast-moving crypto trends. The strategy reflects a more cautious market environment.

The firm has built a steady track record of large raises. It launched a $350 million first fund in 2018. It followed with a $515 million fund in 2020 and a $2.2 billion fund in 2021. The new fund matches the size of that third fund. Cafiero declined to share details about when the latest fund opened or closed. He also did not say whether the previous fund had been fully invested.

Alongside the new fund, a16z crypto promoted Eddy Lazzarin to general partner. He joins existing partners Chris Dixon, Ali Yahya, and Guy Wuollet. The move signals the firm’s continued commitment to building expertise in blockchain technology. Leadership depth often plays a key role in guiding investments during uncertain markets.

The crypto market has seen high volatility since its peak last year. Bitcoin trades near $80,900, reflecting ongoing price swings. Despite this, a16z crypto sees signs of steady progress. The firm says the industry is entering a quieter phase. However, it believes this period brings meaningful development. Many projects now focus on real use cases rather than quick gains.

Stablecoins stand out as a major growth area. Usage continues to rise as they offer faster and cheaper transactions. The firm also pointed to blockchain use in financial markets. These uses include perpetual futures for price discovery, prediction markets for data insights, and on-chain lending systems. These tools aim to create a more open and efficient financial system.

“A new financial system is taking shape,” the firm said. It described a system that runs nonstop, settles quickly, and remains accessible to anyone with internet access.

Regulation remains a key factor in crypto’s future. a16z crypto pointed to the GENIUS Act as a step toward clearer rules. It believes that stronger safeguards can attract more institutional investors. The firm also expressed optimism about the Clarity Act. Cafiero said the company remains hopeful that lawmakers will move forward with the bill this year. Clear regulations could reduce uncertainty. This would help both startups and large investors plan long-term strategies.

Unlike some rivals, a16z crypto will not expand into artificial intelligence or robotics with this fund. It plans to stay fully focused on crypto startups. Cafiero said the fund will invest across all stages. The goal is to support founders building practical products. The firm believes lasting value comes from real-world applications, not early hype.

a16z crypto has backed major players in the industry. These include Coinbase, Uniswap, Solana, Anchorage Digital, and Phantom. It remains unclear whether the fifth fund has already made investments. The firm has not disclosed that information.

Competition in crypto venture capital is also heating up. Haun Ventures recently raised $1 billion for its second fund. Dragonfly closed a $650 million fund. Meanwhile, Paradigm is reportedly seeking up to $1.5 billion, and Blockchain Capital aims to raise about $700 million.

Crypto venture funding has become more selective in recent years. Investors now focus on startups with clear revenue models and strong product-market fit. Easy capital is no longer guaranteed.

Still, top firms and experienced founders continue to attract funding. a16z crypto’s latest raise shows that confidence in the sector remains strong. The firm believes the next wave of innovation will come from builders who turn blockchain infrastructure into everyday tools. That shift, it says, will define the future of crypto.
