ARLINGTON, Texas (Diya TV) — At 85 years of age, Ramesh Sharma has fulfilled a long-held dream: earning his Ph.D. in mathematics from The University of Texas at Arlington. The achievement represents the realization of a promise he made when immigrating to the United States from India in 1976: to make both his homeland and adopted country proud.

Dr. Sharma, who retired as a mechanical engineer from Fort Worth, says he never felt too old to pursue higher education, even after decades in the profession. “Growing up, we were told by our teachers and parents to do something constructive that could benefit humanity or serve as an example for future generations,” Sharma said in a recent interview. “I really took that message to heart.

After his retirement, his education journey began as he went to school again and completed the master’s degree in 2014. “So then, I decided I will not stop,” says Sharma, beaming. “I took one class at a time, but I did it. Am happy that I kept promise to myself when I enrolled into school.”

Not that easy was the journey for Sharma in pursuit of his Ph.D. He found that balancing courses with everyday life’s demands, especially at this age, is not that simple. Still, he motivated his peers and faculty.

“Ramesh has been an inspiration to all of us at UT Arlington with his desire and commitment to continue his education in his retirement when he could have been doing so many other activities that are far more relaxing than graduate school,” said Dr. Tuncay Aktosun, Sharma’s program advisor and a professor of mathematics at UTA. “His unique work and life experiences brought insight to the research endeavors for all of us that had the chance to work with him. I’m so delighted that his family will see his big moment on Dec. 13. He’s earned it.”

Sharma’s accomplishment underscores the broader importance of education for all ages. His story serves as a reminder of the impact that one person’s determination can have, not only on personal goals but also as an example to younger generations.

“Age should never be a barrier to pursuing your dreams,” Sharma added. “We can always find ways to contribute and leave a positive mark on the world.”

Dr. Sharma will walk across the stage to receive his diploma at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, during UTA’s commencement ceremony at Globe Life Field. His achievement has drawn praise from the academic community and well-wishers across Texas.

As he sits in reflection on his long journey, Sharma is filled with pride and fulfillment. “This degree is more than just a piece of paper to me—it represents the fulfillment of a promise, a tribute to my roots in India, and a celebration of my life here in the U.S.”
