CHANDIGARH, India (Diya TV) — A Chandigarh court on Monday sent three young men to five days of police remand after authorities recovered explosives, a detonator, firearms and other material from them.
The three accused will appear in court again on Aug. 29. Police say the men allegedly planned to plant an improvised explosive device, or IED, in Chandigarh. Investigators also suspect links to Babbar Khalsa International, or BKI.
The three men appeared before Dr. Parikshit, Civil Judge (Junior Division), earlier on Monday. The court granted police five days to question them and investigate the alleged terror plot.
Police identified the accused as Lovepreet Singh, 19, from Sarhali village in Tarn Taran district. The other two accused are Jashanpreet Singh, 21, also known as Jashandeep, from Deobath village in Tarn Taran. The third is Prabhpreet Singh, 19, also known as Prabh, from Tarsikka village in Amritsar district.
Chandigarh Police registered a case on Saturday at Police Station 36. The FIR cites Sections 4(b) and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
According to police, officers acted on specific intelligence about the movement of suspected BKI operatives in Chandigarh. They then carried out an operation and arrested the three men.
During the operation, police recovered about 5 kilograms of gelatin stick explosives. Officers also found a detonator, a power source and a remotely operated system. In addition, police recovered a pistol, one magazine and five live cartridges.
Preliminary investigation has pointed to an alleged connection between the accused and Satnam, also known as Satta Naushera.
Investigators allege that the three men came into contact with Satta Naushera and acted on his instructions. Police further allege that the men planned to place an IED in Chandigarh to create terror.
The accused have not been convicted of any crime. The court will assess the evidence as the case proceeds.
