WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — A video showing an American man telling an Indian couple to “go back to India” during a roadside confrontation has sparked outrage online and renewed debate over racism and immigration in the United States.
The clip, which circulated widely on social media platform X, showed a man identified as Tone recording the interaction from inside his vehicle while questioning the couple about their nationality and presence in the U.S. The video quickly drew criticism from users who described the exchange as discriminatory and unnecessary. Many praised the Indian couple for remaining calm throughout the confrontation.
According to the video, the man first approached the couple and asked whether they were from India. After they confirmed their nationality, he asked whether they liked America and which country they believed was better, India or the United States. The couple answered politely. They said both countries had positive aspects and explained that India offered family and cultural connections, while each nation had its own value. The interaction then turned hostile.
“If India is so incredible, why don’t you just stay in India?” the man asked in the video. “Why do you have to come to America?”
The couple responded by saying they wanted “to explore the world.”
The man then said, “No, we don’t want you here. You’ve got to go home. Okay? Get out of my country.” The video appeared online with the caption: “I encountered some incredible H-1B Indians, and I had to let them know something!” The reference to H-1B visas drew additional attention online. The H-1B visa program allows U.S. companies to employ foreign workers in specialized fields such as technology, engineering, and medicine. Indian professionals make up a significant portion of H-1B visa holders in the United States.
Social media users strongly criticized the remarks in the viral clip. Many commenters argued that immigrants and international workers who enter the country legally contribute to American society, pay taxes, and help strengthen industries facing labor shortages. Others described the confrontation as an example of racism disguised as patriotism. Some users said targeting strangers because of their nationality reflected intolerance rather than national pride.
Several commenters also expressed sympathy for the couple. Many praised their calm and respectful responses despite the aggressive tone of the exchange. The incident comes at a time when debates over immigration continue to dominate political and social discussions across the United States. Viral videos involving racial or ethnic confrontations often spread quickly online and generate intense public reactions.
Experts who study online behavior have noted that social media platforms can amplify divisive content because controversial videos attract strong engagement. Clips involving immigration, race, and national identity frequently gain traction and spark heated debates among users. Indian immigrants remain one of the largest immigrant groups in the United States. Many work in technology, health care, education, and business sectors. Indian Americans have also played a major role in entrepreneurship and academic research across the country.
