WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, held talks with US Ambassador to India-designate Sergio Gor at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, as both sides pushed to deepen trade and economic cooperation between the two strategic partners. The meeting took place while President Donald Trump spent the Christmas and New Year holiday season at his Florida estate.
Kwatra’s visit marked his first trip to Mar-a-Lago, a venue known for hosting high-level political and diplomatic engagements. Gor described the meeting as productive and welcomed the Indian envoy during the holiday period.
“It’s always a pleasure to meet with India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra. This was his first visit to Mar-a-Lago!” Gor said in a post on X.
Kwatra echoed the sentiment and said the talks covered a wide range of issues. He highlighted trade ties and the future of the bilateral partnership as key areas of discussion.
“Happy to connect with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor in Mar-a-Lago. Extensive discussions on our shared goal to strengthen trade ties, as well as his plans and priorities for our bilateral partnership as he prepares to assume his responsibility as the US Ambassador to India,” Kwatra said on X.
Trade and economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Both India and the United States have placed growing emphasis on commerce as a central pillar of their relationship. Officials on both sides see trade as a driver of jobs, investment, and long-term growth.
The talks came at a time when India and the US continue negotiations on market access and tariffs. India is close to finalizing a trade agreement with Washington amid concerns over duties imposed on some Indian exports. Leaders from both countries have stressed the need for balanced trade that benefits businesses and consumers in both markets.
The meeting also reflected preparations for Gor’s upcoming role in New Delhi. Kwatra and Gor discussed his priorities and approach as he gets ready to take charge as Washington’s top envoy to India.
India and the United States have steadily expanded their strategic partnership in recent years. Cooperation has grown across defense, technology, energy, and people-to-people ties. Both countries work closely in the Indo-Pacific region and share concerns about regional security and supply chain resilience.
Diplomats say regular engagement at senior levels helps sustain momentum in the relationship. Meetings such as the one at Mar-a-Lago underline the importance both sides attach to frequent dialogue, even during holiday periods.
Gor later extended greetings for Christmas and the New Year. He also met President Trump during the festivities and shared holiday wishes in a separate post.

Separately, Gor said he hosted Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay during the Bhutanese leader’s first visit to Florida. Gor welcomed Tobgay and highlighted the meeting as part of broader regional engagement.
“Enjoyed hosting Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan on his first visit to the GREAT State of Florida!” Gor said on X.
India and Bhutan maintain close political, economic, and cultural ties. New Delhi plays a key role in Bhutan’s development partnership and supports its regional and global engagement.
Amid the holiday season, the US Embassy in India announced a temporary suspension of routine consular services. The embassy said it would remain closed from Dec. 24 to Dec. 26 in line with a Presidential Executive Order.
“The US Embassy and Consulates in India will be closed from Wednesday, December 24, 2025, to Friday, December 26, 2025,” the embassy said in a post on X. It added that routine consular services would not be available during this period.
