WASHINGTON (Diya TV) – The United States and India held a meeting this week on the investigation into a foiled plot to kill a Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. A U.S. State Department spokesperson described the talks as “productive,” stating India has been cooperative throughout the process. U.S. authorities have been probing Indian agents’ alleged involvement in the attempted murder of Pannun, a designated terrorist in India who advocates for a Khalistan nation-state carved out of India.
This case is particularly sensitive as it coincides with tensions between India and Canada, where similar allegations have strained diplomatic relations. Canada’s expulsion of Indian diplomats over the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, another Sikh separatist deemed a terrorist, has only heightened concerns. The U.S., however, remains satisfied with India’s ongoing investigation into the accusations. The meeting, part of wider efforts to resolve the situation, reflects a more cautious approach by both governments to address the diplomatic fallout.
India has assured the U.S. that it is investigating the claims and has already dismissed a rogue intelligence official linked to the plot. Both countries have maintained open dialog, hoping to preserve strengthening bilateral ties that have developed in recent years.
U.S. officials continue to emphasize the importance of protecting American citizens from foreign interference, particularly in politically charged cases involving overseas communities.
