WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Trump stated during his congressional address that U.S. troops have apprehended Mohammad Sharifullah, a high-ranking ISIS-K commander who was involved in the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport. The bombing killed 13 American troops and about 170 Afghan civilians.
Sharifullah, who was arrested in Pakistan’s Balochistan province after joint intelligence operations by the U.S. and Pakistan, has been extradited to the United States. He is to be produced in a federal court in Virginia on charges of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization that caused death.
In his speech, President Trump thanked the Pakistani government for their assistance in the operation. He highlighted the administration’s dedication to seeking justice for the Abbey Gate bombing victims, noting that the capture makes the U.S. “one step closer to justice for these American heroes and their families.”
The Abbey Gate bombing took place on August 26, 2021, during the evacuation of the U.S. from Afghanistan. A suicide bomber set off an explosive device at one of the main gates of the airport, causing heavy casualties to both U.S. troops and Afghan civilians.
According to an affidavit from the Justice Department, Sharifullah confessed to scouting the attack route for the Abbey Gate bombing and admitted involvement in training gunmen for a terrorist attack near Moscow in 2024.
