FLINT, Mich. (Diya TV) — During a campaign event in Flint, Michigan, former President Trump revealed plans to meet Indian Prime Minister Modi in the coming week. Trump, the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, called India a “very big abuser” in terms of its trade relationship with the United States, but also described Modi as “fantastic.”
Although Trump did not specify the time or location for the meeting, Modi is expected to visit the United States for the upcoming Quad Summit, which includes India, Japan, Australia, and the United States. The summit is set to take place in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 21. The Indian Foreign Ministry’s official itinerary for Modi’s visit does not currently mention a meeting with Trump.
Trump’s remarks about India’s trade practices are part of his long standing criticism of what he perceives as unfair tariffs on U.S. imports. Despite his critique, Trump emphasized his strong personal relationship with Modi, which was developed during his presidency. During his tenure, Trump frequently praised Modi’s leadership, and the two leaders appeared to share a mutual admiration.
The meeting between Trump and Modi, if it happens, is likely to focus on trade and economic issues, particularly Trump’s concerns over India’s tariffs. Trump reiterated his position on reciprocal tariffs during his speech, saying, “If anybody charges us 10 cents, if they charge us $2, if they charge us 100% or 250%, we charge them the same thing.” Trump argues this approach would either result in free trade or generate significant revenue for the U.S.
However, some economic experts caution that widespread tariffs could raise costs for American consumers and exacerbate inflation. Trump’s “America First” trade policy has faced criticism in the past for its potential economic impact, particularly when aimed at major trade partners like India and China.
Modi’s U.S. visit comes at a pivotal time, with Washington increasingly viewing New Delhi as a key ally in countering China’s influence in the Asia-Pacific region. President Biden will host the Quad Summit to strengthen partnerships with key Indo-Pacific nations. Though Biden and Modi enjoy a strong diplomatic relationship, the possibility of a separate meeting between Modi and Trump adds another layer to the visit.
If confirmed, a meeting between Modi and Trump would be one of several high-profile encounters Trump has had with foreign leaders since re-entering the political arena. Trump’s continued outreach to global figures, even while out of office, has fueled speculation about his influence in international relations, especially as he campaigns for the 2024 election.
Although the Indian government has yet to confirm any plans for the Trump-Modi meeting, analysts suggest that the former president may be using the opportunity to reaffirm his foreign policy credentials as the race for the White House heats up.
