WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Donald Trump recognized the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) to the United States by proclaiming May 2025 as AAPI Heritage Month. In a formal statement issued on May 16, Trump highlighted the personal journeys of prominent Indian American and Pacific Islander figures, using their stories to underscore the AAPI community’s enduring role in shaping the American experience.
“In the 1980s, Lakshmi and Radhakrishna Chilukuri immigrated from India to the United States and dedicated their lives to higher education,” Trump said in the proclamation. “They built a life in America and raised a family, their daughters Usha and Shreya, instilling in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and a love of learning.”
Trump praised Usha Chilukuri, the daughter of Indian immigrants, for her public service and role as the Second Lady of the United States. He pointed to her story as an example of the American Dream realized through education and commitment to public service.
The President also spotlighted Tulsi Gabbard, describing her as “a native of American Samoa” who has “dedicated her career to protecting our Republic, serving in the military, and now as the Director of National Intelligence.” Gabbard, a former member of Congress and military veteran, has been widely recognized for her service and leadership across various branches of government.
“Throughout our history, the United States has been strengthened by the contributions of citizens from every background, united in the shared pursuit of the American Dream,” the proclamation stated. Trump emphasized the resilience and dedication of immigrant families who, despite hardships, have remained unwavering in their commitment to building a better future for themselves and the nation.
According to the White House proclamation, more than 77,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders currently serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. Trump described their service, as well as the service of prior generations, as critical to America’s security, strength, and prosperity.
“Forged by hardship and trial, they have never wavered in their contributions toward the advancement of our common destiny,” he noted.
The President encouraged Americans to honor AAPI Heritage Month by learning more about the diverse cultures and historical impact of AAPI communities. He called on citizens to observe the month through “appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”
While the proclamation focused on the successes of individual public figures, it also served as a broader recognition of the AAPI community’s integral role in American society. With roots stretching across the Pacific Islands and the Asian continent, AAPI Americans have enriched the nation through innovations in science, leadership in government, excellence in education, and courage in service.
Trump concluded the proclamation by reaffirming values he said are exemplified by AAPI communities across the nation: “resilience, independence, and relentless pursuit of freedom and opportunity.”
