LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Tom Cruise is back with a new high-flying adventure in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth film in the box office blockbuster franchise that hits theaters on May 23.
Paramount Pictures released the official trailer Monday, which features some of the movie’s defying-gravity stunts—including one in which the 62-year-old star hangs upside down from a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane. Cruise, known for doing his stunts, at times, seems to be holding the plane with one hand during the airborne shoot.
The new movie brings Cruise back together with director Christopher McQuarrie, who has been guiding the franchise since Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015. The returning cast includes franchise veterans Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, and Hannah Waddingham. New additions to the cast are Nick Offerman, Katy O’Brian, and Tramell Tillman.
While the studio promoted the film as the “final reckoning,” Cruise was evasive on whether this would be his final outing as Ethan Hunt. “You gotta see the movie,” he replied when questioned by Empire magazine whether he would be reprising the role. “It’s a hard thing for me to talk about right now.”
The franchise began with Mission: Impossible in 1996 and is now known for its growing set pieces and global scope. The most recent installment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, had a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $571 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.
Although popular, the box office was disappointing for the franchise with its high budget, and the studio decided to drop the “Part One” subtitle that was originally meant for a two-part finale. In The Final Reckoning, Hunt battles against wayward artificial intelligence, heightening the stakes on arguably his most impossible assignment to date.
