AUSTIN, Texas (Diya TV) — The Texas House of Representatives has officially designated March 25, 2025, as Desi Day of Action at the State Capitol, after the passage of House Resolution 602 (HR 602). The resolution recognizes the increasing impact of South Asian Texans and gives a voice for advocacy on issues of importance to the community.

State Representative Suleman Lalani of Sugar Land, from District 76, led the effort. HR 602 was introduced on March 19, 2025, and moved quickly through the legislative process. On March 21, it was sent to the Local & Consent Calendars Committee, and on March 25, the House suspended rules to pass the resolution, then reported it as enrolled.

Rep. Lalani, a doctor and one of the first South Asians and Muslims to be elected to the Texas Legislature, highlighted the significance of acknowledging the impact of the South Asian community. “The richness and vitality of the Lone Star State have been enhanced by the diverse contributions of South Asian Texans,” he said.

Desi Day of Action was specifically instituted in an attempt to further engender civic activity in South Asian Texans and designate a specific day in which they may engage in conversations with policymakers and work for matters specific to their community. The establishment was reflective of Texas’ intention to affirmatively celebrate its diversities and to bring the voice of everyone to bear in the legislation process.
