Washington D.C., (Diya TV) — Sunil Sabharwal, a respected independent investor, has become the first Indian-American to hold court in an executive position of the International Monetary Fund. Three weeks after his Senate confirmation, Sabharwal assumed his new role as Alternate Executive Director of the IMF on Wednesday.

Considered a cultured man, Sabharwal was born to an Indian father and Hungarian mother in New Delhi — his parents separated when Sabharwal was 9 years old, and he later moved to Budapest. He would go on to complete his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University, and his Masters degree from the London Business School.

Sabharwal credits a great deal of the business expertise and the savvy mind he’s developed to his time spent studying in the Midwest.

The U.S. controls 16.81 percent of IMF voting, this statistic alone speaks to the volume and power Sabharwal’s new position charges him with.

Originally nominated by President Obama in 2013, Sabharwal was again nominated in 2015. He previously served as board chairman of Ogone, a European e-commerce payment services firm, from 2011-13 and advised Warburg Pincus on its acquisition of Easycash, a German network services company, subsequently becoming a board adviser there from 2006-2009. Additionally, from 2003-2006, he served as the senior vice president of strategic investments for First Data Corp/Western Union and from 1997-2003, held executive posts at GE Capital, including managing director.
