SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived in San Francisco Sunday for the start of her five-day official visit to the United States from April 20 to 25. She was welcomed by Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s Ambassador to the U.S., Dr. Srikar Reddy Koppula, Consul General of India in San Francisco, and Finance Secretary Ajay Seth, according to the Ministry of Finance on X.
The trip, which includes key stops in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., is part of a broader diplomatic and economic engagement initiative. The Ministry’s post stated, “Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was welcomed today at the San Francisco International Airport by the Consul General of India in San Francisco, Dr. Srikar Reddy Koppula, in the presence of India’s Ambassador to the U.S. Vinay Mohan Kwatra and Finance Secretary Ajay Seth.”
During her two-day stay in San Francisco (April 20–21), Sitharaman will deliver a keynote address at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. The speech, titled “Laying the Foundations of Viksit Bharat 2047,” will explore India’s vision for becoming a developed nation by its 100th year of independence. A fireside chat will follow the address, offering an informal platform for deeper discussion.
She will also engage with senior executives from top fund management companies in a roundtable meeting and hold bilateral meetings with CEOs from leading information technology firms headquartered in the Bay Area. She also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora at a community event organized in Fremont, California.
From April 22 to 25, Sitharaman will be in Washington, D.C., to attend the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Her agenda includes participating in the second G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting, the Development Committee Plenary, the IMF Committee (IMFC) Plenary, and the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR).
On the sidelines of these meetings, the Finance Minister is expected to hold bilateral talks with counterparts from Argentina, Bahrain, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as engage with global financial leaders.
Notably, Sitharaman will also meet with Mairead McGuinness, the EU Commissioner for Financial Services, the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA), and the First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, according to the Finance Ministry’s official itinerary.
Following the U.S. visit, Sitharaman will travel to Peru from April 26 to 30—her first visit to the South American nation. Details of that leg of the trip are expected to be released in the coming days.
Her U.S. visit aims to reinforce India’s global economic engagements, bolster investor confidence, and showcase the country’s economic vision for 2047—a key part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development roadmap for a “Viksit Bharat,” or Developed India.
This trip comes at a pivotal time for global economic cooperation, with debt sustainability, climate finance, and digital public infrastructure among the pressing issues facing finance leaders worldwide.
