WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Usha Vance, the wife of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, has announced that she is pregnant with the couple’s fourth child, a baby boy due in July. The news adds a historic and personal moment to the early months of the Vance vice presidency. The announcement came through a post on the social media platform X and quickly drew congratulations from across the political spectrum.
“We’re very happy to share some exciting news,” Usha Vance wrote. “Our family is growing!”
Vice President Vance also shared a statement confirming the pregnancy and expressing gratitude for the care his family has received.
“Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are looking forward to welcoming him in late July,” he said.
Usha Vance is believed to be the first Second Lady in U.S. history to give birth while her husband is in office. While several First Ladies have had children during presidential terms, no previous vice president’s wife is known to have done so.
The last wife of a sitting president to give birth was Frances Cleveland in 1893 during Grover Cleveland’s second term. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy gave birth prematurely in 1963 to Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who died two days later. The Vances’ announcement places them in a rare chapter of American political history.
Vice President Vance highlighted the role of medical professionals in supporting his family during this time.
“During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family,” he said. He also thanked staff members who helped ensure the couple could serve the country while raising their children.
The family lives at the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington.
J.D. and Usha Vance currently have three children. Their sons, Ewan and Vivek, are 8 and 5 years old. Their daughter, Mirabel, is 3. The couple largely keeps their children out of the public eye. In a December interview with USA TODAY, Usha Vance said the children have adjusted well to life in Washington.
“They have full run of the place,” she said. She added that late-night events do not disturb them. “They’re really good sleepers.”
The Vances are also known as the nation’s first millennial second family. J.D. Vance is 41, and Usha Vance is 40.
Usha Vance was born and raised in the working-class suburbs of San Diego, California. Her parents emigrated from Andhra Pradesh, India. Her father worked as a mechanical engineer, and her mother built a career as a molecular biologist. Her background reflects a blend of immigrant experience and professional achievement that has shaped her public role.
Usha Vance met J.D. Vance at Yale Law School in 2010. They joined a discussion group focused on social decline in white America. The couple married in 2014. Before becoming Second Lady, Usha Vance built a respected legal career. She worked as a corporate litigator at Munger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco. She also served as a law clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts on the U.S. Supreme Court. Earlier, she clerked for Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Court of Appeals before his Supreme Court appointment. Her legal work earned praise within the profession and added to her public profile after her husband entered national politics.
Usha Vance has spoken openly about family life and plans. In a June podcast with conservative commentator Meghan McCain, she said her husband sometimes discussed having a fourth child. At the time, she felt comfortable with three but did not rule out another.
“Never say never,” she said.
