WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Trump in a major policy speech announced a new proposal to overhaul America’s immigration policy that he says would give preference to immigrants based on merit rather than family ties. South Asians would be greatly affected by the proposed change, since many could potentially qualify under the proposal, but would not be allowed to sponsor adult siblings, parents or other family members.

Alabama passed a law banning abortion in nearly all cases, unless the pregnant person’s life is at risk. While Georgia, Ohio, among other states passed so-called “heartbeat bills” that prohibit abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected. The new laws are seen by critics as a way to overturn Roe v. Wade at the Supreme Court.

A $790 Gucci turban will no longer be sold at Nordstrom after a huge online backlash accused the retailer and fashion house of cultural misappropriation. Nordstrom apologized for selling the Indy Full Turban. Gucci has yet to comment.

And San Francisco became the first city in the U.S. to ban the use of facial recognition technology by police and other agencies. No backchanneling of that surveillance can be used by third-parties either.
