ELMONT, N.Y. (Diya TV) — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin solidified his position in the record books Sunday evening, breaking the longtime record held by Wayne Gretzky by notching his 895th career NHL goal in a contest against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. The record-setting goal came in the second period, breaking Gretzky’s previous record of 894 goals, a mark many thought was unbreakable.
The audience witnessed the record-breaking moment, including Gretzky himself, who had seen just two nights earlier as Ovechkin broke the record with his 894th goal in a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Capital One Arena. FBI Director Kash Patel and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also witnessed Friday’s event, as it highlighted the magnitude of the moment.
Ovechkin, now 39, has played his entire 20-year NHL career with the Capitals since being drafted first overall in 2004. His work ethic and goal-scoring ability have been the foundation of the team’s success, including a Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described Ovechkin during the post-game press conference as the “legendary master” of ice hockey and praised his sheer number of achievements and contributions in the game.
Reflecting on his record-breaking moment, Ovechkin spoke from the heart to express his gratitude to his teammates, coaches, fans, and family members — including his wife Nastya and his two boys, who emerged onto the ice to shake his hand.
“This moment is not for me; it’s for all the people who have been with me my whole career,” Ovechkin said. Gretzky, “The Great One,” embraced Ovechkin’s record, stating, “It was never a question of if, but when Alex was going to break the record. I’m glad I got to witness this before my own eyes.”
