NEW YORK (Diya TV) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and First Lady Rama Duwaji have officially moved into Gracie Mansion and plan to bring their personal touches to the historic mayoral residence. The couple settled into the 227-year-old landmark on Monday and quickly shared plans that reflect Mamdani’s style.
Standing outside the Upper East Side mansion, Mamdani said one of the first changes he hopes to make involves the bathrooms. He revealed plans to install bidets in the residence, adding a modern feature to the city-owned home.
“One thing that we will change is we will be installing a few bidets into Gracie Mansion,” Mamdani said. He added that the plan remains aspirational and will depend on approvals and logistics.
The comment drew attention online and highlighted the mayor’s willingness to challenge tradition, even in one of New York City’s most storied buildings.
Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence of New York City mayors since 1942. The home sits along the East River in Carl Schurz Park and dates back to 1799. Over the years, it has hosted presidents, foreign leaders, and countless civic events. Mamdani said the grand setting will not change how he lives or governs.
The socialist mayor said he plans to continue using public transportation. He will ride the subway, take the bus, and use Citi Bike to commute when possible. Mamdani said living in Yorkville will not distance him from the daily realities of New Yorkers. His new address sits at East End Avenue and East 88th Street, an area known for its quiet streets and river views. Despite the upscale surroundings, Mamdani said he wants to stay connected to residents across all five boroughs.
On move-in day, he joked about stories shared by former Mayor Eric Adams, who once suggested that Gracie Mansion might be haunted.
“I haven’t yet met the ghost or heard from the ghost,” Mamdani said with a smile.
The remark added a playful note to the transition and showed the mayor’s comfort in addressing the mansion’s long history. Gracie Mansion has often inspired rumors and legends due to its age and past residents. Mamdani said he and Duwaji plan to learn more about the home’s history while also making it feel livable.
The mayor also shared he hopes to adopt a cat in the near future. Mamdani admitted he currently has allergies and has started treatment to prepare for pet ownership.
“I am currently getting my allergy shots so that I can fight off my allergy to cats,” he said. “That’s the hope.”
