NEW YORK (Diya TV) — In a powerful display of resilience and unity, a new statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled outside a temple in Queens, replacing one that was tragically destroyed in a hate crime over a year ago. The event, led by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, symbolized the community’s commitment to love triumphing over hate.

The unveiling ceremony was held at Shri Tulsi Mandir in South Richmond Hill, serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of solidarity and peace that defines the neighborhood.

Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Hindu-American elected official in New York State, played a pivotal role in rallying support for the replacement statue after the original was destroyed in two separate acts of vandalism in August 2022. Her advocacy brought together a diverse coalition of elected officials, community leaders, and people of all faiths.

Mayor Eric Adams, in his remarks during the ceremony, emphasized the city’s commitment to justice and inclusivity. He praised the resilience of the Richmond Hill community and reaffirmed the importance of embracing cultural diversity as a source of strength and inspiration.

The Consulate General of India in New York had strongly condemned the vandalism of the original statue and worked with US authorities to ensure accountability for the perpetrators. The unveiling of the new statue represents a symbolic victory in the ongoing fight against hate and discrimination.
