NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to become India’s longest-serving elected prime minister on June 10, marking another milestone in a political career that has reshaped the country’s leadership landscape over the past decade.

Modi will complete 4,399 consecutive days in office on June 10, surpassing the uninterrupted tenure record held by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The achievement further strengthens Modi’s place in Indian political history as he continues his third term in office.

Modi first took office on May 26, 2014, after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory in the general election. Since then, he has remained in office without interruption. On June 10, Modi will complete 4,399 consecutive days as prime minister. This will move him ahead of Nehru, who served continuously for 4,398 days before his death on May 27, 1964. The milestone makes Modi the longest-serving elected prime minister in India based on an uninterrupted tenure in office. It also highlights the BJP leader’s sustained electoral success and political influence.

Modi has matched Nehru by leading his party to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections. The BJP secured national victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024, allowing Modi to serve three straight terms as prime minister. His political journey began long before he entered national politics. Modi became chief minister of Gujarat in 2001 and remained in that role until he moved to New Delhi after the 2014 election. When his years as Gujarat chief minister are combined with his tenure as prime minister, Modi holds the longest continuous record as an elected head of government at the state and national levels in India.

Modi crossed another major milestone on July 25, 2025, when he overtook former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s longest uninterrupted term in office. Indira Gandhi served continuously as prime minister from Jan. 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977, for a total of 4,077 days. She later returned to power in 1980 and remained prime minister until her assassination in 1984. Her combined tenure as India’s leader totaled 15 years and 350 days, making her one of the most influential figures in the country’s political history.

Nehru remains India’s longest-serving prime minister overall. He spent 6,131 days in office, including the day of his death in 1964. He became prime minister after the Indian National Congress won the first general elections in 1951-52. Nehru then secured victories in the 1957 and 1962 elections, leading the country through its formative years after independence. His leadership helped establish many of India’s democratic institutions and laid the foundation for the modern Indian state.

Modi holds several unique distinctions in Indian politics. He is the first Indian prime minister born after the country gained independence in 1947. He is also the longest-serving non-Congress prime minister in India’s history. In addition, he remains the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as head of the central government and then secure a third consecutive term. These achievements have helped define Modi’s political legacy and expanded his influence within Indian politics.
