WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — US Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), a senior member on the Senate Armed Services Committee and a Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, recently returned from a visit to Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he focused on the country’s security issues and encouraging further reform.

During his March 17-19 visit, Senator Peters had a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and discussing opportunities for U.S. assistance in Bangladesh’s reform efforts.

The interim government’s commitment to protecting human rights and holding free and fair elections was underscored by Professor Yunus. He also highlighted that recent attacks on minorities were politically, not religiously, motivated, and assured that prompt actions were taken against the perpetrators. Senator Peters also met with Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the State Guest House Padma.

The session included major sectors of bilateral relations such as trade, investment, development cooperation, cybersecurity, and climate resilience. Adviser Hossain requested U.S. assistance in countering misinformation and disinformation regarding Bangladesh and called for the reflection of the actual situation of the country to denounce such claims.

During his visit, Senator Peters conducted a roundtable with human rights experts, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. The discussion sought to explore how Bangladesh can leverage emerging technologies, mitigate potential security threats, ensure data privacy, and advance human rights. Senator Peters has been an outspoken supporter of the responsible use of AI, having previously called for hearings to examine the potential threats and benefits of artificial intelligence.
