LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — AURA Entertainment has secured the North American rights to Doin’ It, a fearless new comedy starring and co-written by Lilly Singh. This feature is Singh’s first leading film role and will debut in theaters nationwide on Sept. 19.
The movie premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival. It drew attention for its bold humor and fresh cultural perspective. Singh developed the project through her Unicorn Island Productions in partnership with Likely Story and Camelback Productions, which also financed and co-produced the film.
Directed by Sara Zandieh, Doin’ It tells the story of Maya, a 30-year-old software engineer from a conservative Indian family. Maya works secretly as a substitute teacher while building a teen-focused app. After being unexpectedly assigned to teach sex education, despite never having had sex herself, chaos ensues. The plot delivers sharp cultural commentary while embracing sex-positive themes and awkward humor.
The ensemble cast includes Sonia Dhillon-Tully, Sabrina Jalees, Ana Gasteyer, Stephanie Beatriz, Mary Holland, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Trevor Salter. They bring a mix of comedic timing and heart to the story.
Producers on the film include Anthony Bregman, Erica Matlin, Singh, Polly Auritt, and Anita Verma-Lallian. This team includes a blend of established talent and rising voices in film.
Marc Goldberg, CEO of AURA Entertainment, praised the project. “Doin’ It is exactly the kind of fresh, authentic comedy that defines our slate,” Goldberg said. “It’s wildly funny, sex-positive, and refreshingly honest. Lilly Singh shines as both filmmaker and performer, cementing herself as one of the most exciting voices in film comedy today.”
Singh expressed her excitement about the release. “I’ve always wanted to tell stories that break boundaries and bring joy,” she said. “Doin’ It does both. We laughed so much making it, and I can’t wait for audiences to see a comedy that puts brown girls, awkward moments, and cultural taboos front and center.”
Camelback Productions CEO Anita Verma-Lallian mentioned that the film tackles topics rarely explored in mainstream comedy. “South Asian stories have been underrepresented for far too long,” she said. “Lilly’s fearless approach to tackling cultural taboos creates groundbreaking conversations that matter to us and our audiences.”
The release of Doin’ It strengthens AURA’s 2025 lineup. The company has upcoming titles including the action film Trap House with Dave Bautista, set for Nov. 14; the buddy comedy Code 3 starring Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery, and Aimee Carrero, opening Sept. 12; and the family film K-Pops! with Anderson.Paak, arriving in January 2026.
AURA Entertainment is known for bringing culturally resonant films to theaters and digital platforms. The company plans to release 10 to 15 films annually and has a growing list of titles for 2025 and 2026.
Likely Story, one of the production companies behind Doin’ It, has a history of producing acclaimed films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Foxcatcher, In the Heights, and The Half of It. Unicorn Island Productions, founded by Singh in 2018, focuses on stories from underrepresented communities, especially South Asian perspectives. Camelback Productions, based in Arizona, also champions diversity in film, working to elevate voices that have often been left out of mainstream media.
