LANSING, Mich. (Diya TV) — Former Vice President Kamala Harris will campaign with Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan on Tuesday, Sept. 22, their first public appearance together since she endorsed him after his primary victory.
Harris and El-Sayed will participate in a roundtable on Black maternal health, according to El-Sayed’s campaign. El-Sayed is a physician who previously led health departments in Detroit and Wayne County.
Harris made maternal health a focus during her vice presidency. The Biden-Harris administration launched a federal maternal health strategy that included efforts to reduce pregnancy-related complications and racial disparities in maternal mortality.
El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative, in the November election for the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Gary Peters.
Harris endorsed El-Sayed after he defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. Other national Democrats, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have also campaigned in Michigan following the primary.
Democrats would need to retain the Michigan seat and gain four Republican-held seats to secure a Senate majority.
During her Michigan visit, Harris also plans to meet with local elected officials and the Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the NAACP’s Detroit branch, according to her spokesperson.
