JAMNAGAR, India (Diya TV) — Meta Platforms and Reliance Industries have announced a strategic partnership to develop a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking a major investment in India’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure sector.

The project, announced on June 10, is expected to be completed within two years. It will serve as Meta’s first built-to-suit data center capacity in India and highlight the country’s rising importance in the global AI and digital economy.

The announcement also received support from the U.S.-India Business Council, which congratulated Meta on the initiative and described the investment as a strong signal of the company’s long-term commitment to India.

The new AI-enabled data center will support Meta’s global technology operations. The facility will provide computing power for major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, along with the company’s expanding artificial intelligence services.

As demand for AI computing continues to rise worldwide, technology companies are investing heavily in advanced data centers. The Jamnagar facility is expected to strengthen Meta’s global infrastructure network while increasing its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets. Industry experts view India as a key destination for AI investment due to its large internet user base, growing digital economy, and strong technology talent pool.

Under the agreement, Reliance Industries will oversee the entire lifecycle of the project. The company will handle design, construction, utility management, renewable energy supply, network connectivity, and day-to-day operations. Meta will lease the facility’s capacity and will have the option to expand its usage in the future. The company will also cover all electricity and water costs associated with operating the data center.

The partnership combines Meta’s global technology expertise with Reliance Industries’ large-scale infrastructure capabilities. The company aims to create a world-class AI facility capable of supporting next-generation computing needs.

A key feature of the project is its focus on sustainability. The companies said the data center will rely entirely on renewable energy sources for its power requirements. The facility will also use desalinated seawater for cooling operations. This approach is designed to improve energy efficiency while reducing pressure on local freshwater resources.

Sustainable data center development has become increasingly important as AI workloads require significant amounts of power and cooling. By using renewable energy and alternative water sources, the project seeks to address environmental concerns while supporting large-scale computing operations.

The investment reflects growing confidence in India’s role as a global technology and AI hub. Demand for data centers has increased rapidly across the country as businesses adopt cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.

The U.S.-India Business Council said the project demonstrates India’s growing integration into the global digital value chain. The organization noted that the country is already a leading market for digital innovation and data consumption. Large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Jamnagar facility are expected to attract additional technology investments and support the development of advanced digital services across the region.

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani described the partnership as a transformational step for India’s technology sector. He said the project shows that India is ready to play a leading role in the global AI revolution. Ambani added that Jamnagar is set to become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing. The facility will form part of a larger data center campus being developed by Reliance in the region. Once operational, the project could become one of the most significant AI infrastructure investments in India.
