NEW YORK (Diya TV) — India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar rejected a journalist’s allegation that India sponsors terrorism in Pakistan during a Friday appearance at the United Nations. The exchange followed a briefing on a maritime safety initiative that India launched with Liberia.
The journalist asked when India would stop sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan. “A terrorist country is asking me that question? Come on,” Jaishankar replied. The journalist repeated the allegation as the briefing ended. The exchange did not establish evidence for the claim against India.
Jaishankar and Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti had appeared to announce the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers. Jaishankar said the initiative would bring countries together to address attacks on commercial vessels and risks faced by crews. The organizers had told reporters there would be no time for questions after the ministers’ remarks.
In a separate development at the U.N. on Friday, India signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, according to the U.N. treaty record. The agreement sets out a framework for countries to cooperate on cybercrime investigations and the exchange of electronic evidence.
The U.N. General Assembly adopted the convention in December 2024. India’s signature does not amount to ratification, and the treaty has not entered into force. It will take effect 90 days after the 40th country deposits an instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession. As of Friday, the U.N. listed three parties.
