NEW DELHI (Diya TV) – Doctors in India have replaced the damaged nose of a 12-year-old boy with a new one which was grown on his forehead. Arun Patel’s nose was badly damaged and disfigured as a result.
The infection damaged the cartilage of his nose, making it difficult for doctors to fix it. In 2013, a similar operation was carried out in China where a man who had damaged his nose in a car accident was given a new one. If a case of this sort had happened in the states, the victim and his family would have had to consult plastic surgeons in Denver or the region of their residence in the country.
However, Patel’s parents had taken him to see the doctor of their village in the central state of Madhya Pradesh when he suffered from pneumonia soon after being born. The treatment he received only worsened his condition and he lost his nose due to extensive tissue damage during the process.
The entire operation took about a year to finish.
More than a decade later, a team of doctors in Indore decided to a rare four-phased plastic surgery to give Arun a new nose.
Dr. Ashwini Dash, who served as the lead of the surgical team, said that he was “confident that the new nose would work properly like his other organs.”

In the first phase of the process, a silicon “tissue expander” was applied to Patel’s forehead to create the space to grow a new nose. Afterward, a special chemical was injected to make the tissues expand. The second phase involved the removal of cartilage from his chest to create the new nose, which grew on his forehead over the next three months.
The doctors removed the artificial nose during the third phase, ultimately implanting it on his face. The fourth and final phase of the process was spent to repair his forehead.
