LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Indian American community leaders hosted a fundraiser for Los Angeles City Councilmember and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, who discussed housing, homelessness and city services with supporters, according to India-West.

Raman is challenging incumbent Mayor Karen Bass. Her campaign has emphasized faster housing construction, improved public services and efforts to restore entertainment industry jobs.

Vinod and Jayshree Jivrajka, Anil and Renuka Badlani, Navneet and Ritu Chugh, Dr. Nitin Nanda and Manasvi Mamgai chaired the gathering. Guests included business professionals and community members who questioned Raman about concerns across Los Angeles.

Housing affordability and homelessness dominated the discussion. Raman addressed expanding housing supply, easing affordable housing development and connecting people experiencing homelessness with shelter and permanent housing. She also discussed renter protections, public safety, transportation and environmental issues, India-West reported.

An urban planner and immigrant, Raman represents Council District Four. She first won election in 2020, becoming the council’s first Asian American woman and first South Asian member. Voters reelected her in 2024. Before entering office, she co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition and co-chaired the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council’s homelessness committee.

Her office reports that its outreach efforts have moved thousands of people into interim housing and hundreds into permanent housing since she took office. Those programs combine case management, shelter placements and housing assistance.

In July, Raman’s office reported that unsheltered homelessness in her district declined by nearly half from the previous year, citing Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority data.
