ATLANTA (Diya TV) — Dr. Narendra Nagareddy, a psychiatrist who has been dubbed as “Dr. Death” by local media pundits for his alleged role in the deaths of 36 of his patients, has been indicted on three felony counts of murder and 57 charges of unauthorized distribution of a controlled substance.

Nagareddy was arrested in January, and has since been held in jail without bond. The indictment was brought against him Wednesday.

“Nagareddy has regularly prescribed excessive amounts of controlled substances for no legitimate medical purpose, resulting in the abuse and diversion of the prescribed controlled substances,” the indictment read. He distributed drugs to patients who had never supplied him with previous medical records, MRIs or prescription records, according to court documents.

The indictment alleged Nagareddy prescribed powerful painkillers, drugs that were outside the scope of his regular practice. At least 12 of his patients have died from overdosing and another 36 deaths have been directly linked to his practice, the indictment said.

“He became well known to addicts on metro Atlanta’s south side as a doctor that you could score drugs from without a hassle,” the indictment further stated. “Nagareedy regularly prescribed Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Fentanyl and Methadone, as well as other highly addictive drugs.”

“What it means is there will no longer be prescriptions issued by D. Nagareddy that result in the deaths of any innocent people,” Clayton County district attorney Tracy Graham-Lawson said during a television interview.

In March, Nagareddy told a local TV station he was innocent.

“I’m explaining to you, sir, I’m an honest man. I look after all the severely mentally ill patients, please understand, sir.”
