NEW YORK (Diya TV) – Huma Abedin has officially filed for divorce from embattled former Rep. Anthony Weiner, a move she made before Weiner pleaded guilty Friday to transferring obscene material to a minor.
Abedin, herself a former top aide to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, was not seen by Weiner’s side at Friday’s court hearing.
At the Friday hearing, Weiner accepted responsibility for his conduct in the incident. “I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse,” during a tearing statement before the court. “I entered intensive treatment, found the courage to take a moral inventory of my defects, and began a program of recovery and mental health treatment that I continue to follow every day.”
As part of the 52-year-old’s plea agreement, Weiner will register as a sex offender and will also be forced to forfeit his iPhone, surrender his passport and continue his mental health treatment. He will also be barred from having any further contact with the minor involved in the offense.
“Today, former Congressman Anthony Weiner admitted and pled guilty to sending sexually explicit images and directions to engage in sexual conduct to a girl he knew to be 15 years old,” acting US Attorney Joon H. Kim of the Southern District of New York said in a statement. “Weiner’s conduct was not only reprehensible, but a federal crime, one for which he is now convicted and will be sentenced.”
According to the New York Post, which first reported the story, Abedin filed an “anonymous versus anonymous” action in Manhattan Supreme Court and is asking the court to seal the case. The Post reported that the filing is uncontested, which means she is not expecting a fight over custody or the couple’s assets. An uncontested divorce is rarely seen between two polarizing people, normally those who are looking at getting a divorce from their partner would expect some opposition from the other spouse using a law firm similar to Peters And May: west end law firms, however, due to the scandal that has risen over her former husband such a divorce is seen as understandable.
Abedin announced she was separating from Weiner in August, just hours after his third sexting scandal came to light.
