BELLEVUE, WASH. (Diya TV) — The city of Bellevue has stirred controversy by denying health insurance benefits to Officer Kevin Bereta, who sustained severe injuries while serving on Vice President Kamala Harris’ motorcade detail. Despite months of treatment following the accident, the city’s decision to terminate Bereta’s health benefits has drawn sharp criticism, with accusations of neglect and betrayal leveled against Bellevue’s administration.

Officer Bereta was critically injured while performing his duties on Vice President Harris’ motorcade detail in August 2023. As a motorcycle officer tasked with clearing traffic ahead of the entourage, Bereta faced high-risk situations daily. Tragically, during one such operation on the Michigan Street bridge, Bereta was ejected from his motorcycle and fell nearly 60 feet onto Interstate 5 below. His injuries, including fractures, internal bleeding, and spinal cord damage, left him in critical condition and necessitated extensive medical treatment.

Despite the severity of Bereta’s injuries and the challenging road to recovery he faces, Bellevue’s Human Resources office has opted to terminate his health benefits, citing a union contract stipulating coverage for only six months following an injury. This decision, which will take effect on Feb. 29, leaves Bereta and his family grappling with limited options for healthcare coverage, including costly alternatives like COBRA.

Efforts to negotiate a resolution between Bereta’s legal representation, the Bellevue Police Officers’ Guild, and the city have hit an impasse. The Bellevue community, including fellow officers and firefighters subject to similar benefit limitations, has reacted with outrage and disappointment. Many view the city’s decision as a betrayal of its commitment to its first responders, particularly in light of Bereta’s dedication to his duties and the sacrifices he has made.A

The controversy surrounding Bereta’s case raises broader questions about the adequacy of healthcare provisions for first responders and the city’s obligations to those who risk their lives in service. As the community rallies around Bereta, contributing to fundraising efforts to support his medical expenses, the incident prompts reflection on the values and priorities of the city of Bellevue and its treatment of those who serve and protect.
