Chicago-based anesthesiologist and resuscitation expert Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy is the 169th President of the the Chicago Medical Society.

CHICAGO (Diya TV) — Chicago-based anesthesiologist and resuscitation expert Dr. Vemuri S. Murthy is the 169th President of the the Chicago Medical Society.

Representing approximately 17,000 physicians offering their services to about five million people, CMS is one of the largest medical societies in the U.S.

In his inaugural address at a banquet on Sept. 12, Murthy emphasized demand for more active physician participation in organized medicine, citing today’s “rapidly changing healthcare arena affecting physician practices and patient care.”

He encourages younger physicians including medical students to join a medical society, citing benefits such as advocacy, education, informational exchange and networking.

Murthy is founder of the CMS Community CPR project SMILE (Saving More Illinois Lives through Education) which focuses on raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrest with CPR education throughout the greater Chicago area. SMILE was the first community CPR project offered to the public by a Medical Society in the U.S. Participants of the SMILE program have included the Congressmen, legislators, members of the Chicago Consular Corps and members of the Indian Consulate.

Murthy has been a volunteer of the American Heart Association for many years. He is a past Chairman of the Anesthesiology department at West Suburban Medical Center and past President of the Indian American Medical Association, Illinois.

Dubbed a pioneer in resuscitation education in Indian Medical Colleges, he is an advisor to the training centers and a visiting University Professor and is leading a community CPR project in India.

Among his many accolades include being a “Champion of Global Health” and recipient of several national and international awards to public health education.

He graduated from Guntur Medical College and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (New Delhi) in India and Rush Medical Center in Chicago.
