PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Diya TV) — State Rep. Arvind Venkat has been named the 2025 Legislator of the Year by the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-PA). The award recognizes Venkat’s leadership on health equity, patient safety, and support for social work across the state.
NASW-PA, the largest professional association for social workers in Pennsylvania, praised Venkat as “a practicing physician and strong partner” in advancing policies that improve community well-being and strengthen social work practice. The Legislator of the Year Award is part of NASW-PA’s annual PACE (Political Action for Candidate Election) honors, which highlight lawmakers who support the mission of social work.
Venkat represents Pennsylvania’s 30th House District, covering McCandless, Franklin Park, Ohio Township, Kilbuck, Emsworth, Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, and parts of Hampton Township. On X, Venkat expressed gratitude for the recognition, writing, “Truly honored and humbled to be named by The National Association of Social Workers, Pennsylvania Chapter as their Legislator of the Year.”
He added, “As an emergency physician who has worked with social workers my entire career, I understand how critical our social workers are for the health and well-being of our community and state.”
Before entering politics in 2022, Venkat served as an attending emergency physician at Allegheny General Hospital. He has drawn on his medical background to advocate for policies that expand access to affordable healthcare, strengthen emergency services, and address social determinants of health.
Venkat was born in Madurai, India, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He earned degrees from Harvard University and Yale School of Medicine. His professional experience in emergency medicine has informed his approach to policymaking, emphasizing practical solutions that improve both healthcare systems and social services.
In 2022, Venkat won a competitive race in the North Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh, flipping a Republican-held seat for the Democrats. Since taking office, he has focused on bridging the gap between healthcare and social work to ensure communities have the resources they need.
NASW-PA highlighted Venkat’s work in promoting policies that benefit social workers and their clients. Social workers play a crucial role in addressing mental health, supporting vulnerable populations, and connecting people to necessary services. Venkat’s legislation has focused on enhancing these efforts, recognizing the essential partnership between healthcare providers and social workers.
By combining his medical expertise with public service, Venkat has become a prominent advocate for policies that improve health outcomes and social welfare. His initiatives aim to create a more equitable system where access to care and social support is available for all Pennsylvanians.
The Legislator of the Year award underscores Venkat’s dedication to public service and health advocacy. NASW-PA’s recognition not only honors his accomplishments but also highlights the importance of collaboration between lawmakers, healthcare professionals, and social workers in building stronger communities.
Venkat’s leadership continues to shape Pennsylvania’s approach to healthcare and social services. By championing policies that support social workers and community health, he demonstrates a commitment to practical, compassionate governance.
As communities across Pennsylvania face growing healthcare and social challenges, leaders like Venkat provide a model of service that bridges medicine, policy, and social work. His recognition by NASW-PA reflects a career focused on improving both individual lives and the broader public good.
