SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — Angel Reese scored 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds Monday as the Atlanta Dream beat the Golden State Valkyries 79-65 in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, tying the best-of-seven series at one game apiece.
The victory gave Atlanta its first win in a WNBA Finals. The Dream had gone 0-10 in three previous championship appearances. They also took home-court advantage from Golden State, which won Saturday’s opener 68-64.
Reese shot 10 of 16 from the field, added three assists and blocked two shots. She became the third player to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a Finals game, joining Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart. At 24 years and 166 days, she also became the youngest player to record a double-double in WNBA Finals history.
Reese scored 15 points in the first half Monday after going scoreless after halftime in Game 1. “I let my team down last game,” she said, explaining why she wanted to make a stronger impact. Dream coach Karl Smesko said he noticed her focus before tipoff.
Atlanta led 39-37 at halftime despite foul trouble: Reese had three fouls and Rhyne Howard had four. The Dream then outscored Golden State 21-9 in the third quarter and carried a 60-46 lead into the final period. Atlanta made only 4 of 16 shots from the field in the quarter but converted all 12 free throws. Its defense held the Valkyries to 9 points without sending them to the line.
Howard finished with a Finals-record six steals, helping Atlanta turn Golden State’s 19 turnovers into 24 points. The Dream had scored only eight points off turnovers in Game 1. Allisha Gray added 18 points, while Jordin Canada recorded 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
Golden State struggled to find its shooting touch. The Valkyries made 34.4% of their shots and went 7-for-24 from 3-point range. Gabby Williams, who led the team with 26 points in the opener, scored 14 on 3-for-15 shooting. “We shot terribly,” guard Veronica Burton said.
Atlanta’s defensive pressure also ended Golden State’s run without a regulation loss, which dated to an Aug. 21 defeat at Chicago. The Valkyries played before a packed Chase Center crowd; the arena has sold out every game since the team began play last year.
The series moves to Atlanta for Game 3 on Wednesday. The WNBA shifted Games 3 and 4 to State Farm Arena, which holds more than 17,000 fans, compared with about 3,500 at the Dream’s regular home, Gateway Center Arena. Tipoff Wednesday is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern.
