NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Airtel said Tuesday that it has signed an agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s fast satellite-based internet services in India, the first such arrangement in the country. The alliance, subject to SpaceX’s regulatory approvals to offer Starlink in India, looks to increase broadband coverage, particularly in rural and underpenetrated areas.
Airtel and SpaceX intend to investigate the integration of Starlink’s satellite internet with Airtel’s existing telecom network. The firms will look into possibilities of providing Starlink services through Airtel’s retail shops and enterprise networks. This partnership could also bring increased connectivity for schools, hospitals, and villages.
Airtel, India’s prominent telecom operator, has been attempting to enhance its digital connectivity solutions. The firm has already partnered with Eutelsat OneWeb and finds Starlink to be a complementary element to its broadband services. With this tie-up, Airtel intends to augment pan-India coverage, especially in regions with poor or no connectivity.
This deal with SpaceX is a major milestone for Airtel and a reaffirmation of our focus on bringing world-class high-speed internet to every Indian,” said Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel Ltd. “Starlink will further our capability to provide affordable and reliable broadband so that even the most rural areas have access to digital services.
SpaceX officials also had positive views about the partnership. “We look forward to working with Airtel and unleashing the revolutionary power of Starlink in India,” stated Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX. “Airtel has been a leading driver of India’s telecom industry, and this agreement is consistent with our vision of bringing connectivity to the world.”
Subject to government approvals, the deal may set the stage for greater broadband availability in India, supporting the nation’s drive toward digital inclusion.
