LONDON (Diya TV) — Police are investigating a clash that broke out during a Holi celebration outside the Harrow Civic Center last week after a group of youths disrupted the event and damaged equipment, according to organizers and witnesses.
The incident happened on March 3 during a community celebration of the Hindu festival of Holi. Organizers said about 1,000 people had gathered for the event, which took place near the Harrow Central Mosque. Police confirmed that officers responded to reports of disorder and made one arrest.
The event was organized by the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre, a spiritual and cultural group that hosts community gatherings and religious celebrations. Witnesses said the celebration proceeded peacefully for most of the evening. Music, prayer, and traditional Holi festivities filled the area. Families and community members attended the gathering.
Organizers said the situation changed around 8:30 p.m. when three teenagers approached the event area. Shri Rajrajeshwar Guruji, founder of the ISSC, said the teenagers tampered with the sound system.
“They chucked the speakers on the ground and ran away,” he said. “The speakers are now broken.”
According to Guruji, the teenagers came from the nearby mosque area and quickly left after damaging the equipment.
Organizers said the same individuals returned a few minutes later with a larger group. Witnesses estimated the group included between 15 and 20 youths. Guruji said several individuals wore balaclavas that covered their faces.
“They threw beer cans into the fire, threw glass bottles, and hurled barriers on the ground,” he said.
Videos shared on social media appeared to show a chaotic scene as some people ran while others tried to calm the situation. Event volunteers and security staff attempted to control the disturbance. Guruji said a Sikh security guard approached the group to stop the disruption.
“The Sikh security guard went over, and they tried to harm him as well,” he said.
Organizers said tensions rose quickly as some attendees tried to defend the event area and protect participants.
Organizers contacted police as the situation escalated. Officers arrived at the scene shortly afterward. Authorities confirmed they arrested one individual in connection with the incident. Police did not release further details about the suspect.
Investigators are reviewing evidence and witness statements as part of the ongoing inquiry. Local authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of people involved in the disturbance. Police also have not reported serious injuries related to the incident.
The disturbance has sparked concern among members of the local Hindu community in Harrow and across London. Holi celebrations usually focus on unity, joy, and cultural expression. The festival marks the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil in Hindu tradition. Community leaders said the disruption shocked many attendees because the event had drawn families and children.
Several residents called for calm and urged authorities to complete a full investigation. Community representatives also encouraged dialogue between different groups in the area. Harrow is known for its diverse population and strong multicultural traditions.
Religious and cultural festivals often bring large groups together in public spaces across London. Organizers usually coordinate with local authorities to ensure safety and smooth operations.
Community groups stressed that peaceful celebrations remain essential for maintaining harmony in multicultural neighborhoods. Authorities continue to investigate the March 3 incident near the Harrow Civic Center. Police have asked anyone with information or video footage to come forward.
