PORTLAND (Diya TV) – The Oregon Department of Education has made a landmark decision by officially recognizing the difference between the sacred Swastika and the Nazi Hakenkreuz. This move represents a significant advance in preserving the true meaning of these symbols, according to the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).

In a recent post on X, the HAF celebrated this “historic win” for the community, highlighting the role of persistent advocacy in achieving this decision. They emphasized that the recognition marks a crucial step in safeguarding the sanctity of the Swastika for future generations.

The Swastika, an ancient symbol used in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, represents concepts of luck, auspiciousness, and the divine. Its origins date back thousands of years and it holds profound significance in various Asian faiths. In contrast, the Nazi Hakenkreuz, which the Nazi party appropriated, is associated with hate and intolerance.

The Oregon Department of Education clarified that while the hooked cross is commonly referred to as a “swastika,” it is more accurately called the “Hakenkreuz” when referring to the Nazi symbol. The Swastika, derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “good to be,” symbolizes positivity and well-being in several cultures and religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Jainism, and some Native American traditions.

This distinction helps to counteract the negative connotations associated with the Swastika due to its misuse by extremist groups. The decision aims to prevent the misappropriation of this sacred symbol and educate the public about its true cultural and religious significance.

The HAF commended the Oregon Department of Education for its role in ensuring that symbols like the Swastika are respected for their positive meanings and are not overshadowed by their distorted representations. The foundation encourages ongoing education and awareness efforts to preserve the Swastika’s true significance amidst widespread misconceptions.
