Shri Thanedar wins Michigan Congressional seat
Published

DETROIT (Diya TV) – Michigan voters made history after voting to send the first Indian American to Congress from the state. Shri Thanedar, who ran for a seat in the U.S. House beat out his Republican opponent Martell Bivings. It’s the first time in 70 years Detroit won’t have a Black representative in Congress.
Across the nation, other Indian Americans are winning as well. In Illinois, Democrat Nabeela Syed is projected to win and would be the first Muslim elected to the state’s legislature. In Ohio, Dr. Anita Somani is leading in her House District race. And Aruna Miller, a former Democratic state legislator, made history in Maryland as the nation’s first Indian American woman to be elected state lieutenant governor.
Control of Congress is still up for grabs after Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections with many of the most competitive races uncalled, leaving it unclear whether Republicans would seize control from President Biden’s Democrats.
