India have climbed the ranks of the UN World Tourism Organization, thanks in part to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national tourism drive.

UNITED NATIONS (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been very vocal in increasing the country’s tourist economy, and it finally seems to be paying off.

According to the latest UN World Tourism Organization’s rankings, India have shot up 16 places, to No. 24 in the world. India previously ranked No. 41 and No. 40 in 2014 and 2015.

The rankings take into consideration both the statistics of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) and the arrivals of non-resident nationals (NRIs). Thus far, only the figures from the arrivals of FTAs have been compiled.

While addressing a conference of Tourism, Culture and Sports ministries on Jan. 20 this year, Modi said, “As far as tourism is concerned, India is blessed with so much potential and this can draw the world to India.”

Earlier this month, India’s rank in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index for 2017 had jumped 12 places from 2015. India sat in the No. 40 spot, as compared to No. 52 in 2015, No. 65 in 2013 and No. 68 in 2011.

Roseville Police in California say a taxi driver, Rajbir Singh, saved an elderly passenger in his cab from giving a scammer $25,000. The 92 year old told Singh she was about to withdraw the money to settle a debt with the IRS. It sounded like a scam to Singh, who asked the woman to reconsider, even detouring to a police station to help convince her not to withdraw her money. Eventually, she decided not to proceed. Roseville Police say Singh should be honored with a “great citizen award.”
